Paul, we live in a weird new world.

On the 9th May I emailed the LUG with a query on windows compatibility
issues in that it uses a particular routine called Waasmedic Agent to
analyse any of my files that are not created by a Microsoft program
(i.e. Adobe, etc) and report same back to MS. It also had a tendency to
remove program items from my taskbar like Thunderbird. Screen black outs
and crashes happened regularly as the pc hung. Per a recommendation from
Jayanand, I reviewed all my programs run at start up and deleted merrily
all around me. I also unplugged the USB for my PreSonus mike and
speakers before boot ups. I appears to me that MS has decided to
intrusively use all of us users as cash cows to be milked for data, and,
possibly, in turn, deflect us from using non MS products. Of course,
your opinion (and theirs) may differ.

In our current brave new world, MS say that Windows 10 is a service and
no longer just an operating system, and, of course, you have to agree to
what appears to be 400 odd pages of conditions. So an analogy: you buy a
car from the local dealer, sit in it, adjust the seat, steering wheel,
mirrors, etc. and drive home in it where you hang your favourite set of
irritating orange furry dice from the rear view mirror, pat yourself on
the back and go into the house. The following morning, new car in mind,
you jauntily leave the house, blowing kisses to your beloved and leaping
into the air while clicking your heels, get into the car, find the seat
adjustment has been changed, along with the steering wheel, mirrors.
and, to cap it all, your furry dice have vanished. Yes, it appears the
dealership inspect your car for changes every night and send someone to
reset everything to their ideal normal. So much for freedom. What's
next? Fines? Gulags?
