Japan wanted to expell all of the Western powers from Asia and run the
entire Pacific rim. We were the only other major power in the region
that
was in a position to be an obstacle. The idea was that by destroying
the US Pacific Fleet, they would be able to rapidly over run the weaker
Pacific nations and be so dug in by the time we had time to rebuild our
fleet, that it would have been impossible or extremely difficult to
dislodge them. Unfortunatly for them they underestimated the enormous
industrial power of the USA and the fact that both the Atlantic and
Pacific form the worlds greatest anti-tank ditches. So, while the rest
of the worlds industry was bombed in to the stone age, we were able to
assemble fighter planes on open fields in Burbank, CA.
