My strongest memory of Pamlico County and especially Pamlico Sound was 
that it had so many mosquitoes you had to drive with your lights on. 
I've never seen more mosquitoes per cubic foot anywhere in the world.

I guess it must be seasonal; you'd be dead from blood loss if those 
mosquitoes had been around while you were photographing.
