I found another pairing in my files. It's "Marie Josephine Charlotte du
Val d'Ognes" by Marie Denise Villiers, 1801 (Metropolitan Museum of Art)
and a photo of an Art History student in Mitchell Hall that I took in
1979. The artwork must have been in the back of my mind when I came across
the scene down the hall from the Art History department (where I got my
degree in 1972). For years, this painting was attributed to Jacques-Louis
David.
