with dots per inch. The printer will place many more
overlapping, variable sized and spaced dots than that. For the 3800, up to
2880 dpi in fact although that really only seems to use
much more ink for no discernable benefit compared to 1440dpi.
I don't personally have any experience in printing from Lightroom. I print
from Photoshop. I think that the jury is still out on
colour management work flow with Lightroom. I'll leave that to those with
Lightroom experience.
Charles, a print resolution of 300 ppi is generally accepted as sufficiently
fine for the illusion of continuous tone. Of course
variations will work. Epson printers are described as having a native
resolution of 360 ppi. I cannot detect any difference in the
prints from either. Many people like to work with multiples of that to
reduce software interpolation. I think that may be
simplistic, but it doesn't hurt! Scanned from film originals, I use 360ppi
for 8 inch x 11 inch (approx) prints and 300 ppi for
larger. Note that those are from film scans. You are in for a treat if you
print files from the M8 which natively provides 240 ppi.
No doubt you know that original digital images scale completely differently
than those scanned from film.

From Lightroom's Help:
In the Print module, the Print Resolution setting specifies the dots
per inch (dpi) of the photo for the printer. Lightroom resamples the
image data if needed, depending on the print resolution and the print
dimensions. The default value of 240 dpi is usually satisfactory for
many print jobs. Refer to your printer's documentation to determine
its optimal resolution.
In the Print Job panel of the Print module, do either of the following:
* To control the print resolution, select Print Resolution and
specify a different value, if necessary.
* To use the native resolution of the photo (as long as it isn't
lower than 72 ppi or higher than 480 ppi), deselect Print Resolution.
