I have the LS-4000 but I doubt the scanners have gotten worse. I don't think you can adjust it with Nikonscan, but with Vuescan, if you preview the first frame and it looks off, you just click on the frame adjustment and preview again. Usually, one click to the adjustment box (1.875 or something like that) or occasionally two clicks (3.7 something) do the trick. If I remember correctly, I rarely have problems with slides but VS does seem to do a better job of locating the frames on the B&W negs. Once or twice I had a scan where the frames progressively get more and more off but it is very rare and rescanning solved that. I scan everything since it is so easy, so probably over 1000 rolls have gone through the setup.
