If by "less than 1/50" you mean "slower than 1/50", then, yes, I've done it 
a lot.
If you mean "faster than 1/50", then it depends on the specific camera. My 
IIIf can sync strobe at 1/60, but no faster. At slower shutter speeds, the 
entire shutter is open for quite a while, so flash sync is not an issue.
