Leica does not have enough production capacity to keep up with present
demand as it is. This why some lenses are in short supply. Lenses are done
in batches and the less popular lenses have to wait their turn in the queue.

Increase production capacity you say? Leica sells into a niche market that
is very vulnerable to the worlds economic conditions. The Asian flu just
about put the current Leica management out of business. Leica lenses require
precise assembly and cannot be mass produced without a significant lowering
of quality.
