      I normally use a rubber pad which is good to open stuck jar cap.

I found that using a practice hockey puck will work as a firm means of 
holding the pressure required while unscrewing a too tight filter.
     
The 3 inch diameter is adequate to secure most lenses, and the 1 inch 
thickness ot the rather soft rubber yields just enough to grip the 
ring while unscrewing the ring.
