It is most famous, or rather infamous, for a pogrom on Jewish survivors of the Holocaust in 1946 which killed about 40 people. That nasty history is acknowledged today. But besides, Kielce is a pleasant enough town. It is not a place visited by tourists from abroad; such visitors go to Warsaw or the other big cities like Krak?w, Wroc?aw or Gda?sk. The only places I saw signs in English or German were the central train station and the bus station. Otherwise, the only foreign language I heard in the street was Ukrainian, a reflection of the huge number of Ukrainian refugees in Poland. In late September I made my third visit to Kielce; as on the other two occasions I was there to speak at a weeklong event on intellectual property arranged by the local technical university in a nearby village called Cedzyna. During this trip, I saw some of the same places as last year, but also many new spots, including (surprisingly) the bus station, a great example of Communist-era architecture which was actually quite good?perhaps because architecture was an easier outlet for creative people than writing or music, since there was less for censors to spot ?deviant? tendencies.
