I don't think I've used the 600 + TC with a smaller tripod yet, but as long as I don't extend the tripod too high the smaller ones are fine with the 600 by itself. I use the tripods mostly to keep the camera on target and to reduce muscle fatigue, the camera's stabilization system does the steadiness work.
