That was my first guess, too, but mail clients record the ID of the 
message to which they are a reply (this is how "threading" works). Jim's 
mutated message had this notation:

In-Reply-To: <9FE4E4CE-DDC7-49B5-9873-FFC9AB76BD5F at gmail.com>

That code ("9FE4E4CE-DDC7-49B5-9873-FFC9AB76BD5F") is the identifier of 
Philippe's reply to "Rose, etc."
Which is correct.
