I think it?s thought of as 2 or 3 or 4 generations ago; whole ?classes? of glass ago. That?s just too long a time to compete with all that?s gone down in optics I think.
I think if Leica comes out now with a 100 macro it?s going to be not in the same league as Nikon/Canon the price will reflect that. But not one them make 31 years ago. Nostalgia just doesn?t fit in there.
It would be in all ways a premium product not the level Nikon/Canon is prepared to make. They?re just not going to work at that price point they?d rather sell more units. I?m ok with that. A grand in a half to me is not cheap I don?t need to not spend 6 grand an amount I may never see in the same place at the same time again.
A Nikon macro has never been something to take lightly though it may have invented the standard non tele macro a 50 or 55mm and Nikon users invented the idea of using them for all around stuff. As your normal walking down the street standard lens. I?m into that. I shoot with macros all the time and often don?t get around to shooting closer than a meter with them. My Nikon 105 and 60mm macros from a decade back.
I also have a 55 3.5 AI macro which is light, small and has a distinctive fingerprint. And is several decades back. I?d not use it for a macro job though.

Based on looking at the specs it seem some R glass are a clear step up from old back then Nikon or Canon glass.
But much of them even back then were not any kind of special inspiration.

Mark. Are you comparing R lenses with Nikon, canon, etc? Having shot with
R and Canon and Nikon, that is not a good comparison. My R glass far
outdoes any of my Nikon and Canon glass. Have you tried the 100/2.8 APO?
Or the 35-70/4? A world of difference.
