anyone thought of some sort of etching so the paint will stay on better?

I've come to the same conclusion. Testor's Flat Black applied with a really
pointed brush. Brings back memories of buliding model cars as a kid.
Black Sharpies are not a viable way to coded lenses for the Leica M9 sensor.
