Thanks for all the input:  recipes, health tips,
common sense advice, admonitions and urban internet
legends on Xtol Sudden Catastrophic Failure Syndrome. 
I will add them to my collection.

It occurs to me to ask -- since there are some heavy
xtol users here, with an extensive body of collective
experience -- have any of you personally experienced
the heartbreak of xtol failure?   Share with the group
and we will be here for you.
