            According to Ghester Sartoriu' Book - Identifying Leica Lenses -
on Page 101 - he stated

            " Leica does not suggest indiscrimate use of the R1.4x with all
lenses, but does guarantee excellent results
              with the Macro - Elmar R 100mm f/4, the elmar-R 180mm f/2.8,
the TelytR 400mm f6.8 and the TelytR
              800mm f/6.3 which is transformed into a 1120 f/8.8"

Does anyone know how to tell which version of this lens is compatible
with the 1.4x APO?  Is it strictly by s/n, or can the earlier
(incompatible) version be modified?
