[Author Prev] [Author Next] [Thread Prev] [Thread Next] [Author Index] [Topic Index] [Home] [Search]Now now let's not go overboard. I love my M2 and when I wanted to upgrade
to a camera with a light meter my choice was a used M6ttl. After a year I
thought I might chuck it in the river. Instead I sold it to a nice
gentleman in Korea and decided to buy something new so to have a warranty,
etc. Seemed like a good idea. My only choices at the time were an MP or
M7. I chose the MP simply because it best fit my needs without
distractions; it was the closest to the M2 I had been using. After having
the MP for 2 years I can say the choice was correct for me. And I've had to
use the Passport! I think the M6ttl may have been a low point but the
others, including the M5, are great.

That's fine, and may well be true. But it hardly turns all Leicas before
it to chopped chicken liver. Would HCB have done better work with an MP?
Would Mary Ellen Mark do better work with an MP? Would Ted Grant do
better work with an MP? Would Jeffery Smith? Of course not. There is
always something "far more solid," and far more expensive out there. But
that doesn't make it better in real world terms. If the M6 was built
like a Bessa, then buying an MP would make a great deal of sense. But
given that an M6 will outlive any of the current owner's of M6s, the MP
is reduced, or elevated, to neck jewelry status - an expensive toy for
rich aficionados who believe that only if they possess the cr?me de la
cr?me can they hold their heads up. It is, in other words, a waste of
money. If someone's got the money, and wants to waste it, more power to
them. But deifying the MP the way some do strikes me as quite silly.

After having handled the MP, it is hard to handle anything else. It
feels
like it was carved from a billet of steel. People compare it to the
build
quality of the M3, but it seems far more "solid" and smoother to me. I
cannot imagine an RF being made any better than the new MP.
