Thursday, July 22, 5-7 pm
Museum of Contemporary Photography
Please join us for the opening reception in celebrating the work of Mary
Ellen Mark. This exhibition will present her recent project Twins and her
1978 series Falkland Road: Prostitutes of Bombay. During August of 2001
and 2002, Mark set up an elaborate portable studio tent on a volley ball
court during the annual Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, Ohio and
employed a Polaroid 20 x 24 view camera to capture in extraordinary
detail the minute similarities and differences between sets of twins. In
1978 after ten years of attempting to photograph in Falkland Road Mark
began to slowly gain acceptance and won the trust over a select group of
women and made a personal series that captures the daily life of these
prostitutes.
