Actually, we do leave a light on when we leave on a trip. we also have one
on a timer. Unless you unplug the item it will not be completely protected
from lightning, surge protectors are only a stop gap, not a guarantee.

It is both a waste of electricity and does do a certain damage to the
atmosphere.... A laptop computer itself uses about as much electricity as
a
night light, a desktop uses about as much as a 60 w bulb. Would you leave
a
60 w bulb on at your house if you were gone for 3 weeks? I doubt it.
But you might leave on a night light.
However more important is the damage that could be done to your data if
something happens to your power lines. Shut it off if you are gone a
Glitch
( regardless of your UPS ( uninterruptible power supply) size or quality)
can get to your computer and make files or programs get scrambled.
