I compared the Canon 500/4 to my 560/6.8 Telyt and there was no comparison
the 560 won easily, my wife's opinion, by the way without knowing which was
which.

I became a little disappointed by my 280 f2,8 after I treated myself to
a 500 f4 Canon. I know it is much more recent but it is very noticeably
superior in sharpness and boke.
