Tom,
Welcome to the lifelong obsession that is Leica. Please be advised that
you would do well to simply throw your wallet away at this point in time. You
will never again need a place to store cash. Your camera bag will take care of
that for you.
I'm relatively new to Leica specifically, and photography in general, so I
can't advise you on your choice of cameras. There are plenty of knowledgeable
folks here that will soon enough.
I can say that, following several LUGgers advice, I've been using Fuji
Neopan 1600 quite happily for b+w, and I also scan with an Epson 2450. I've
been happy with Superia 100 for color negs; the colors are pretty faithful, and
the color saturation isn't as high as Reala, so skin tones come out nicely. My
website has scans of both, if you are interested (weeks 20 and 22 are good
examples, ignore earlier photos, as they are from B.E. 2450)

Of course, this isn't going to give you much of a sense about printing quality,
but it's the best a humble newbie like me can do. :-)
Regards,
Michael Gerard
