I will add this to what Seth has said:
1. I am aware that "dealers" often put up items with no
intention to sell, and that a SHILL bids on it or bids it
up to a very high price. This is done several times over
time to "establish" the market price for the item so the
unknowing will then buy it at the very inflated price. I
know it is done with cameras, I know it is done at several
"big name" auto auctions.
2. More than a few camera stores are marketing nationwide,
or worldwide, on auction sites because they can sometimes
get higher prices in an area where the item(s) is scarce.
3. I have bought a used book from xxxx and also from
Amazon.com because they were simply not available here.
