While I agree we see an occasional bidding war on eBay (wasn't there a
$5,000 Nikon lens hood?), or a silly item, like an M2 box for several
hundred dollars, for the most part items seem to go for 10 or 20 percent
less than dealer listed prices. Bargains can be found with unpictured
items, items from sellers with limited feedback, auctions ending at odd
times, or misspelled names ("Rollieflex" is my favorite.) All too common
is the item priced at the dealer price level that fails to meet reserve.
Has anthing changed since the days of Samuel Johnson? "The value of a
thing? 'tis precisely what it will bring!
In the meantime, I note over the past year or two that many of the
supposedly well established camera dealers have quietly gone under. Who
needs a middleman in an age of transparent information exchange?
