Actually, I was just at PhotographersPlace Sat nite. Yes, its very NY, but I
have to say they were very nice & quick & another customer w/ an M4P & a
salesman & I got into a nice leica discussion.
I also picked up a copy of TheGreat Photogs of WWII for $15. Its put
together by a magnum editor.
Nice shot of a German photog's boot stuffed w/ a pistol & a curious double
Leica swinging off his hip. Some sort of bracket that held two leicas
baseplate to baseplate.
I was glad that I skipped Amazon.com & went by the shop.
Tragedy of the evening: got home & my old 50elmar black shade had fallen off
my blackLeicaIII. It was a thoughtful gift from a friend. Can anyone point
me to a replacement?

Gene Smith - Shadow & Substance
If anyone is
interested, the Photographers Place in NY is selling Jim
Hughes' biography of
w. Eugene Smith for $14.95 + shipping. This a
substantial book and
a great read. It might not answer all your questions
about Smith, but it
sure will answer more than you realsied there was to
know!
Photographers Place
# is 212 431-9358 (fx: 941-7920). BTW, don't expect
friendly Amazon
service... they are often very New York, but have a great
selection. I don't
think they believe in websites yet.
On a similar tack, I
also came across an interesting interview with W E
Smith, though the
website seems to have disappeared. If anyone would like to
read it, I think I
kept a copy - e mail me privately.
