Raimo, Edison did not invent flexible film. But with the advent of the
cellulose based flexible film that Eastman introduced for the Kodak No. 1 (not
the Kodak) Edison's lab photographer, William K.L. Dickson, assigned to work
on what was to become the Kinetoscope, purchased some of this 70mm wide
Eastman film, slit it in two lengthwise, punched holes at the edges for
traction and came up with what eventually became adopted as the 35mm film
format, albeit in the motion picture industry initially.
