This could also have been a bad battery caused by leaving the shutter speed
dial in other than B with something have partially pressed down on the dial
while in your camera bag to cause a drain on the battery. The symptoms this
event exhibits are essentially the same as you describe. It is easy to have
happen as this is a common storage problem and one wouldn't expect the
battery to be mostly dead after just 10-rolls of film. Their explanation
might just be a face-saving measure and their way of saying, "the battery
was dead, we replaced it." Just a thought.
