GmbH, or G.m.b.H., stands for Gesellschaft mit beschrankter Haftung,
literally, a company with limited liability. It is one of at least two German
terms of incorporation. The other, abbreviated AG or A.G., stands for
Aktiengesellschaft. The difference is that an AG's stock is traded publicly
and that of a GmbH isn't. According to the brochure for the M6 I picked up a
couple of weeks back, Leica is an AG these days.
Either could be translated into American English as "Inc." or British
English as "Ltd." To be absolutely correct, there should be an Umlaut over
the A in "beschrankter" (because of the E in the following syllable).
