Roger & Alex -
That is exactly correct; dealers have advertised that way for years
and as far as I know, it is only the Leica Historical Society Catalog
that requires all S/Ns to be in full.
I must add a bit of trivia here; Some years back, a member asked
if anyone had serial number 1234567. Another member Alan McFall
happened to be visiting in the UK at that time & found that very M4P
in the John Newcomb collection that was on display in England then.

Wondered myself, Alex. Only thing I can think of is that, for instance,
I could take your full serial number and report it to the authorities
as if I owned the lens and had it stolen. You would have to prove
ownership to retain it. STM, however, that most Leica folk could
easily prove ownership, thus opening the false claimant to the proper
prosecution.
What are Alex and I missing here. I'm the lemming on this one, doing it
because others do it.
