Nikon were the innovators, yes. The Nikon FA model used a 9 segment
meter, reading the scene in zones, then used a reference table lookup to
evaluate the meter results, picking the best exposure based not only on
the illumination recorded but on the scene analysis from the reference
table. They've expanded on the concept since, adding the prime focus
plane distance into the analysis ("3D Matrix Metering"). The success of
that design has now made it into most of the top level SLRs, the Leica R8
being one of them. It's a great system.
