Greetings!
Earlier today, I posted a query to "leica-users" regarding the
pros and cons of purchasing Leica equipment by mail-order, plus a
question about the reputation of some of the New York mail-order houses.
Here is a summary of the replies I received, ordered by category:
1. Bad mail-order firms
Smile
Cambridge
2. OK mail-order places
B&H
47th Street Photo
Adorama
Wall Street ("maybe")
3. Smaller Leica mail-order outlets
Don Chatterton, Seattle
Jim Kuehl
"check Shutterbug for their addresses and phone numbers"
4. Warranties
Any Leica equipment sold for less than "USA list" is most
likely to be grey market stuff and is not covered by
Leica's "USA passport" multi-year warranty. However, the
store you buy it from may offer an alternative, possibly very
good warranty. E.g., Don Chatterton's merchandise comes with
a one-year warranty provided by DAG in McFarland, WI.
5. Miscellaneous Contributions
- several people have ordered Leica stuff from Don Chatterton
or Adorama, and report that they're very happy with it
- beware of some of the NY mail-order houses; they may try to
sell used equipment as new...
- when in doubt, call Leica USA at (201) 767-1100
- why buy Leica stuff in the first place, it's so expensive...
Thanks to all who replied to my query!
Sincerely,
Mico Loretan
