But for personal work one doesn't need talent because for personal work it's the pursuit that is the most important thing - the challenge, the struggle to meet it, the satisfaction and frustration. We live in such a huge fishbowl these days that small talents are considered trivial. In earlier days simply being able to play the piano would be a gift to many people who otherwise would never hear it. Now someone who plays is compared to recorded music of all the greats and so the joy of sharing and discovery is lost. One of the valuable aspects of this community which Brian has so thoughtfully created for us is the ability to share our work with people of similiar interests and divergent talents. There are big talents and lesser ones here - say stretching from Ted Grant to my rather humble postings. We respect the exposure that goes into sharing them and give of ourselves when we offer our responses. Our community works best when it encourages people to post more of their images and to talk about why they are successful and when we share amoungst ourselves our passions for the art and craft of photography as well as our passions for other elements of our lives. It's why talking about Tilly hats and scotch and cars and even politics (to a lesser extent) aren't REALLY off topic here. All of those things inform the other, just as Tina's passion for the people in Honduras informs her photography. It's not what talent is - but it's about sharing what talents we have is all about: how to be open and generous and kind and critical all at the same time.
