Prior to that it had to do with the fact that they wanted autofocus, they wanted all the features, whether you or anyone else on the LUG wants them. They also wanted the support that they got from Nikon and Canon Pro Services. And I have news for you - you can count on your finders and toes the number of people who are shooting with gear that they get free from any of the companies. Sorry - the reality is that the days of the rangefinder in daily photo journalism are long over. Sure, there may be one WH person who shoots with Leica M - just like there was one person shooting on the campaign trail with a 4x5. Big deal. Actually, the word now in the PJ world is that, ironically, the higher up the food chain one is, the better chance one has to be "allowed" to shoot some film if one wants to. Sure, a James Nachtwey - if he used Leicas, which he doesn't - could shoot WH events with Ms, because he's James Nachtwey. But your average wire service, newspaper shooter can't do it because he wouldn't be competitive. Love your Ms all you want, but try to view the world realistically through that nice bright viewfinder. ;-) B. I'd be tempted to use Canon too if I were a working White House photographer and all my gear was FREE. Seems to be the way the Japanese buy market share, just as Nikon did in the seventies when they were buying share by providing free gear to much of the glossy magazine press and National Geographic. I know. I was there and was using the same lab in NYC at the time. (K&L) I note there is still ONE White House photographer who uses mostly nothing but an M7 and 28 ASPH. Wonder why... :-) William At 11:20 AM 10/21/2004 -0400, you wrote: >Thank to Chris Williams for injecting a bit of sanity into the >conversation...:-) > >-----Original Message----- >From: lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org >[mailto:lug-bounces+bdcolen=earthlink.net@leica-users.org] On Behalf Of >Christopher Williams >Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 11:09 PM >To: Leica Users Group >Subject: Re: [Leica] Leica back in action > >There's always the White House press with those little black cameras >around the necks, with the big white lenses around the shoulder. > >Chris > >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Douglas M.
